Staples Associate Category Merchant in Framingham, Massachusetts


Position Summary:

The Associate Category Merchant, reporting directly to Dir CPC-Merchandising is responsible for managing a product line or group of product lines for sales, margin and supply chain including turns. This includes assortment planning, merchandise and vendor selection, negotiation, financial planning, inventory impact implications, advertising plans, merchandise presentation, distribution, vendor relations and administration for assigned lines. With guidance from Dir CPC-Merchandising, develop and execute strategies for driving sales and margin, and competitive differentiation.

Primary Responsibilities:'

  • With assistance from Dir CPC-Merchandising,develop a realistic and effective business plan for each product line toachieve budgeted goals in sales, margin, supply chain impact (including turns),and drive execution of plan Identify alternatives for driving sales in face ofnegative trends

  • Develop and approve disposition plans

  • Develop and execute written strategy for productlines taking into account cross-functional implications

  • With support from Dir CPC-Merchandising, chooseitems and vendors for assigned product line(s)

  • Negotiate with vendors for lower total deliveredcost, volume incentives, rebates, advertising and other applicable allowances. Meetwith vendors in development of marketing plans

  • With Support from Dir CPC-Merchandising,merchandise assigned line(s) to ensure service levels with minimum inventoryinvestment and maximum gross margin. Effectively manage impact on total supplychain by leveraging knowledge of inventory turns and logistics to secure bestdelivered costs

  • With Dir CPC-Merchandising, review and approvefinancial and item forecasts with Planners

  • Manage adjusted margins working with manager

  • Work with Marketing, Inventory Management,Stores, North American Delivery (NAD) and other functional areas as needed toachieve corporate goals

  • Develop ability to utilize appropriate resourcesto gather data

  • Interpret basic financial statements, totalcosts to serve the product, financials levers and metrics used in merchandisingto understand current and future trends. Identify exceptions and seekadditional information when data discrepancies are found

  • Develop proactive communication; assess the needfor immediate action


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree

  • 3-4 years’ experience in buying related functions (Merchandising,Planning, Inventory management

  • Influencingskills, verbal and written communication skills

  • Abilityto work independently and cross functionally

  • Intermediateknowledge of Microsoft Office with the ability to develop and manipulatespreadsheets

  • Stronganalytical skills

  • Abilityto work in a fast-paced and changing environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA

  • Inventory and Store as well as Buying and Planning experience

  • Relevant e-commerce experience
